How to Bounce Back – Big or Small

Yesterday, I spent approximately 2 hours listening to Sonia Ricotti’s webinar on bouncing back from any and everything ailing your life that’s preventing you from experiencing the only things that matter:

~GRATITUDE
~JOY
~LOVE
~PEACE

Without these 4 Foundational Factors, life is generally filled with pain, sadness, fear and misery. And who ISN’T tired of that vicious cycle, leading you down the dark path of No Man’s Land. Ugh.

Now, I’ve fallen off my webinar “game,” as I am not comfortable promoting anything that I do not believe will truly help us on a WHOLE level. Trust, I’ve had countless emails from my motivators and “Master Teachers” encouraging me to embark on this or that program’s journey or offerings… etc. etc. etc. BUT. After a short while of listening to some of the recordings, it became very clear to me that they were just not offering ENOUGH.

So, how is Sonia Ricotti’s webinar any different, you ask? I’ll let YOU be the judge and determine for yourself if this is a journey you envision yourself going through and coming out on top in the end.

Stay Healthily Wealthy.

Simple Science

+To Healthy Happenings+

<> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <>

I know I have been thinking more and more frequently about what it means to truly motto-ize “the wealth of health” and how I can better encourage myself and those I affect to BE about the concept.

SEE the concept.

Take in all the “bad” and agree to only contribute to the “good.” Always listen and speak little – you will realize how much you’re appreciated for this. Happiness is a life-long journey to self-achievement, especially as you re-train yourself to fulfill within that which could not be fulfilled externally.

BE the concept.

The value in self-reflection is nearly inconceivable, because of the constant focus to be cookie-cutter copies of misconception in our fictitious “reality” programs. Without self-reflection there is no self-awareness and chaos and confusion ensues.

LIVE the concept.

Taking ownership of your actions, choices and decisions and ensuring that they are a reflection of all things Peaceful… makes the logistics of it all that much simpler to attain. Focus on adding good and powerful energy in your realm rather than “removing” bad and draining sources. In time, that which appeared so *bad* before shows and proves otherwise!

Every sentient being began their journey the same in this life. Whether you crawled, scooched or dragged yourself to get where you needed and wanted to be, it took a lot of effort to achieve anything before you learned to walk. There is no need to fear or be hesitant to crawl/scooch/drag before you walk right.

One thing I constantly hear is that “I’m too old to start over!” There is no age-limit on learning or growing, so why hinder yourself with such a thought? You can DO or you can NOT DO. The simpler it’s seen, the simpler it is.

While the saying “Misery loves company” stands true, the fact that Love leaves no one Untouched stands more powerful than the former.

See the Love that exists in You.

Be the One to define the times.

Live like Tomorrow is Today.

Herbal Healing Hunt(ing)

A reader recently reached out and asked:

What are your top recommendations for purchasing herbs/teas? (In-store & Online)

This spawned some heavy research on my part, as I already knew of a solid number of places in mind that I readily go to (mostly online) in the event that I need an herbal blend/tonic/fix and/or tea medleys.

Upon mulling over the first thoughts I had, I realized that there are several of us out here who prefer to deal with this type of science at hand – person to person, tangible exchange to tangible exchange. There are many bonuses in purchasing herbs, roots and teas in-store and meeting an herbalist face-to-face to discuss personal ailments, issues and curiosities.

With SO much done on-line these days, how do we stay in tune with our Humanity?

Thankfully, many of the herbalists that we can meet face-to-face are just as willing to part and share knowledge with us by phone and email, so even the healthiest busy bees can seek out and find wisdom for their needs – especially when all that time allows is a few quick clicks of a mouse.

Still, though, I could not think of supplying an answer to the initial question without thinking of an avenue for my beloved people who are more apt to make in-store purchases over online purchases. And while I know that this article may be touched by folks across the continent (and the seas!), I had to make a narrowed list – what with my own busy bee schedule.

Should your city not be listed and you struggle in finding a local “hot spot” for your herbal healing needs, please feel free to reach out to me. I will do my best in helping you find someone close to home or knowledgeable enough to make you feel at peace about making a purchase online.

Combat with the “Common” Cold

In this day and age it is a pretty well-known fact that it can be difficult in finding the Tried and True – whether it be in break-ups to make-up, long-lasting products built without the factor of planned obsolescence or something as seemingly simple as a cure for what ever ails us. This can be most frustrating when dealing with frequent and recurring ailments, such as the “common” cold.

How is it *common* yet there is no *common* cure?

I run the risk of asking this question, knowing that there are a plethora of responses like: “let it run its course” and “drink lots of fluids” and many more I opt to overlook. To me, those are not cures or solutions, as it can take a “common” cold a ridiculous amount of days to “run its course.” And when you’re not well enough to consider doing much of anything, how does running to the bathroom every hour or so (give or take 30 minutes) from “drinking lots of fluids” encourage a quick recovery?

I have come to realize that there is one simple cure/solution for combating the “common” cold.

Listen to Your Body!

It is not unforeseen that the body alerts you when it has come to recognize the changes in season, the steady drop in temperature and how it chooses to deal with these effects. You can feel the difference almost instantaneously in your bones, your muscles, sometimes even your nerves. And due to our inclination to always be on the move, we generally ignore these signals and push our bodies to a breaking point…

Then we wonder: “How did I get sick?

We bundled up every day we went out, we made sure to wear hats, gloves and thick socks (most of the time) and we ate lots of warm foods. However, we never stopped to consider that it may be best to expose ourselves a bit less to freezing (and below) temperatures and stay indoors bundled up with an array of blankets and a few cups of hot tea (no, not joe). We didn’t factor in that spending a bit more “ME” time with the self and spoiling the body with such things as sleep, hot foot baths and gentle massages would allow and provide for great circulation, relaxation and much needed stimulation.

While we have a tendency to take a few of those “personal sick days” off from work in the warm summer months, we ought to reconsider switching things up and relishing in that time during the winter season. It can really pay off in the end, most notably by ensuring a healthier, happier body that can ultimately stay “on the move.”

As I mentioned curling up with a few cups of hot tea, consider this Tried and True Tea Blend Recipe shared by the Vegetarian Health Institute:

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup dried echinacea leaves
  • 1/4 cup dried peppermint leaves
  • 1/4 cup dried lemon balm leaves
  • 3 Tbsp dried elder berries OR 1/4 cup dried elder flowers

Directions:

Add all ingredients to a glass jar and shake gently to combine. Seal jar tightly. Store your Cold and Flu Tea away from heat and light for up to a year. This blend will make approximately 24 cups of tea.

To Make One Cup of Tea:

  • 1 cup of filtered water
  • 2 tsp Cold and Flu Tea blend
  • Green stevia for sweetener, if desired

Add tea blend to tea infuser or tea ball. Bring water to a boil, remove from heat. Pour water into mug and add tea. Steep for 5-10 minutes. Add green stevia (if using) and stir until dissolved. Drink up to 3 cups of tea per day as needed.

When the season first hits (which may be the case for the mid and east coasts right now!) I recommend having 2-3 cups of this blend daily for at least one week. You can supplement for other equally effective herbs [like Coriander, Garlic, Ginger, Goldenseal, Lemon+Honey, Mullein or Sage] or use the ones listed above singularly throughout the next week or two utilizing the same dosage. Continue alternating throughout the entire season.

Also, consider a foot bath (you can purchase a large bucket for under $3 from most dollar stores) with a nice portion of epsom salts. Make sure it’s hot enough to handle and soak for at least 20 minutes. Castor oil up afterward to encourage that much needed circulation, and make sure it’s not diluted. Lastly, be mindful of how and what you eat. Don’t be concerned about “fattening” up for the winter; focus on lots of Greens, Fruits and Vegetables. If you can home-make your dishes, I highly recommend doing so; it helps to better monitor what you’re eating. The key: The Fresher, The Better!

Combating the “common” cold starts with Listening to Your Body… if your body is down, you are down, so focus on staying Up.

The Blood Type Diet

While researching a personally recurring ailment, I stumbled upon an ad within the article I was reading that stated something to the effect of: “What foods to avoid for Your Blood Type.” The brief line alone piqued my interest greatly, and I wish I had clicked on the offered link at the time. I’ve since re-visited this information page many times, but that same ad is no longer lingering on the page, unfortunately. Rather than be discouraged, I placed this topic on my “To Learn More” list and have been doing periodic research on it ever since.

Admittedly, there is great curiosity and excitement in the idea of creating an *agreeable* diet centered around one’s biological genetic information that makes you YOU. How many of us have actually considered that what we eat can adversely and/or beneficially affect our blood and de/increase its level of efficacy for [un]healthiness? I know for myself, despite being a hard-core advocate for True Vegetarianism (no lacto, no ovo, no in-betweens – just *straight* real vegetarianism), I didn’t even connect this as a consideration. As our energy and consciousness grows and becomes more definitive, we are exposed to higher sources of knowledge and power, and I don’t doubt that my eye catching the attention of that ad was coincidental. Whether to re-affirm or disregard the “importance” of eating for one’s genetic design, I think it best to investigate so as to make an independent judgment according to one’s own attributions towards health.

Certainly, there is a slight “craze” revolving around the concept of a Blood Type Diet, regarded as genius to some and ridiculous to others. The modern day pioneer for blood type dieting is advocated in large part by Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo, who hosts several websites catering to his studies and findings relative to the topic. Honestly, his theories have NOT won me over by far, but I do think he may be on to something all in all. He encourages certain blood types to eat animals, which is something I cannot and will not support, as the Animal Kingdom is not a segment of the Human “Kingdom.” Animals were not made from humans and humans were not made from animals, so we are not (co)dependent upon each other for sustenance for our bodies [eating insects such as bees has no nutritional value for humans].

I noticed that there is a significant push for O Blood Types to eat meat in high doses, which was described as bringing a number of these “types” to severe discomfort and unease with their energy and ability levels by different people of this type. The slight Saving Grace for Dr. D’Adamo is that he boldly states:

“If you’re a bread-eating Type O and you’re happy with your state of health and life is wonderful, you shouldn’t even be in the nutrition aisle in the bookstore; I write books for people for whom those other things don’t work.”

In a way it seems like another gimmick to drive us to try out the new “fad” in managing health and wellness in an increasingly careless society regarding true health and wellness. This makes it more difficult to present any actual Facts about dieting for your specific blood type. For instance, my sister is O+ and she thrives off of meat and [artificially] acidic liquids, while my significant other is O- and thrives off of a True Vegetarian diet consisting of grains and fresh fruit and vegetables. They are both O’s, but they eat completely differently and couldn’t imagine eating as the other does (short or long-term).

While Health and Wellness go hand in hand in reality, they are quite distanced in the world of science and education. This is most notable in the required courses for doctors (even specialists) to “prepare” for *practicing* on people. Nutrition studies are placed low in significance to health and wellness, despite this being one of the most crucial aspects of how we maintain our livelihood. The use of chemicals and lab creations are deemed as the necessary “go-to” where foods, herbs and liquids are stripped of their natural nutritional value (make-up) and formulated into an experimental tonic. These are just facts, easily found in *practice* throughout western society.

According to Dr. D’Adamo, three out of four people (in his studies) benefit from eating his recommended diet for their Blood Type, so while the odds are high, there is still plenty of wiggle room for detriment to arise. Considering that there is no distinction between dieting for a positive or negative Blood Type, I think this leaves the window open – so to speak – for independent trials and error (as is the case between my sister and my mate) where the dieter makes the final decision by listening to the body.

There are a number of [re]sources available to those who are curious about what should be eaten and what should be avoided, including the many sites from Dr. D’Adamo. In short, I will list the main points sited time and again by Blood Type Diet[ing] advocates in a sort of “series” starting with A+ and A-:

Type A: “flourish on a vegetarian diet – if you are accustomed to eating meat, you will lose weight and have more energy once you eliminate the toxic foods from your diet. Pure, Fresh and Organic foods can supercharge the immune system and potentially short circuit the development of life threatening diseases.” Chew food completely to ensure proper digestion, as Type As typically have low levels of stomach acid to aid in breaking down more complex foods.

Having heightened cortisol levels – limiting the body’s ability to effectively (and naturally) deal with and recover from stress –  makes incorporating calming exercises a requirement for Type As. Dr. D’Adamo recommends, Hatha Yoga, Tai Chi and Meditation and Deep Breathing Exercises.

The Water Well

Not too long back, I ran across an article that greatly sparked my interest and prompted me to further my research on the topic.

It is entirely centered on Water
How It is “Sourced
And how It is Distributed (mostly in the form of a plastic bottle)

The initial article I stumbled on was written by a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, entitled “The Truth About Plastic Water Bottles.” The key in this article is the doctor’s clear distinction that there is absolutely NO difference between the plastic used to bottle water or soda pop or fruit/vegetable juices. All of these plastic bottles are made with chemicals known as plasticizers, with the “ability” to make plastic strong and flexible.

The most common plasticizers used are PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) and Polycarbonate plastics, both actively known to cause disturbance amongst the natural function of human hormones. These plasticizers are used to store water, juices, and soda pop alike, without discrimination and are chalk full of phthalates and bisphenol-A (better known as BPA). The transparent numbers placed within the Recycle Emblem are a great indicator of the precise chemical make-up used to form the plastic bottle for commercial use.

A concise list is available for printable use in the article here: http://www.smart-publications.com/articles/the-truth-about-plastic-water-bottles#.Ux38gVqGy8w.google_plusone_share and can be found below:

#1 PETE or PET (polyethylene terephthalate) – used for most water and soda bottles. The ingredients include resins made from methane, xylene and ethylene combined with the chemical ethylene glycol and other chemicals. These have flame retardants and UV stabilizers added.

#2 HDPE (high density polyethylene) – used for cloudy milk and water jugs and opaque food bottles. Resins made from ethylene and propylene resins and have flame retardants added. When burned these release formaldehyde and dioxin if chlorine was used during manufacturing.

#3 PVC or V (Polyvinyl chloride)- used in some cling wrap, soft beverage bottles, plastic containers, plumbing pipes, children’s toys, vinyl windows, shower curtains, shades and blinds and many other items. They create toxic by-products when burned such as PCB’s and dioxins. Made from petroleum resins and have flame retardants added.

#4 LDPE (low density polyethylene) – used in plastic grocery bags, plastic wrap, bubble wrap, dry cleaning bags, and flexible lids. Resins made from ethylene and propylene resins and have flame retardants added. When burned these release formaldehyde and dioxin if chlorine was used during manufacturing.

#5 PP (polypropylene)- used in yogurt cups, some baby bottles, screw-on caps, toys, drinking straws. Resins made from ethylene and propylene resins and have flame retardants added. When burned these release formaldehyde and dioxin if chlorine was used during manufacturing.

#6 PS (polystyrene)- used in egg cartons, foam meat rays, clear take out containers, plastic cutlery, toys, cups, CD containers. Resins made from ethylene and propylene resins and have flame retardants added. When burned they release styrene and polyaromatic hydrocarbons.

#7 Other (usually polycarbonate) – used in 5 gallon water bottles, some baby bottles, and lining of metal food cans. They create toxic by-products when burned such as PCB’s and dioxins. Made from petroleum resins and have flame retardants added.

Now, begs the question: What type of bottle should be used to drink liquids – water,  juice and soda pop included?

Well, the good Doctor reports that glass and metal are the best options, and I encourage the same, as well as drinking as much from a natural fresh source of “spring” or well water. Even still, it is all a grave concern due to the increase and frequency of air pollution … that inevitably reaches the world’s natural water sources and supplies. One must also consider that most bottled water sources are largely unknown due to manufacturer resistance to transparency regarding the Purity of their waters (http://www.ewg.org/research/ewg-bottled-water-scorecard-2011/summary-findings).

Painting the Organs with Acrylamide

Most recently I’ve grown increasingly aware of and concerned about this little known chemical compound referred to as Acrylamide. In my discussions with my small circle of Vegan Foodist friends, I’ve come to learn that most of us are completely oblivious to this toxicity we are unknowingly ingesting on a pretty regular basis.

The first question and response that comes to mind is generally something to the effect: “Is it something found in processed foods? Cuz I only eat processed foods sparingly.” Great question, great thought. But it’s nearly inescapable for us all – whether carnivorous or herbivorous – simply due to Acrylamide’s chemical make-up.

So what is it? What foods is it found to be present?

As simply put as possible, I shall quote the authorities responsible for the management of food inspection and food safety: the FDA. “Acrylamide is a chemical that can form in some foods during high-temperature cooking processes, such as frying, roasting, and baking…Acrylamide is found mainly in foods made from plants, such as potato products, grain products, or coffee. Acrylamide does not form, or forms at lower levels, in dairy, meat, and fish products. Generally, acrylamide is more likely to accumulate when cooking is done for longer periods or at higher temperatures.”

So stop baking, frying and roasting my plant foods, right?

According to the FDA, that is not advisable, despite the logic in eliminating baking/frying/roasting as a cooking regimen. In fact, the FDA’s “best” advice  is to follow that which is mapped out in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (http://www.health.gov/dietaryguidelines/2010.asp). In turn, it stirs the question:

Should I be *cooking* food at all?

Considering that Acrylamide caused cancer in animals in studies where animals were exposed to acrylamide at very high doses and has been viewed as a significant human health concern for the past 4 years, I lean toward that being a *very* valid question! And if you’re already a vegan, exactly how hard would it be to transcend to a RAW vegan lifestyle?

It important to note that the Governmental Administrator for Food states that “food packaging is not a source of formed acrylamide,” to later advise that “Acrylamide is produced industrially for use in products such as plastics, grouts, water treatment products, and cosmetics. Acrylamide is also found in cigarette smoke.” I find that to be rather contradictory, as food packaging in America is *primarily* encased with Plastic… Just pay close attention at your next grocery shopping visit, and you will discover the truth in my statement!

Now I know and recognize the array of questions this chemical compound coined as Acrylamide brings to the surface of light. If you’re wondering what is being done to remedy the exposure of acrylamide in our foods in America, I can tell you that the government isn’t doing much at all. There are some manufacturers who are seeking ways to reduce acrylamide in their products, but it appears research has remained stagnated on that topic for more than 7 years.

My best personal advice is to do the following:

  • Start limiting your intake of baked, fried and roasted foods in general, to of course include potatoes (including chips), fruits, and grain (products).
  • Avoid “browning” foods – keep potatoes golden in color, as well as work on just warming bread rather than “toasting” it.
  • Eat all cooked foods in moderation.
  • Transition to Yerba Mate in place of coffee. It’s cheaper, anyhow!
  • Gradually transcend to a fully RAW Vegan Lifestyle.

Cooking at temperatures exceeding 120 degrees Celsius (248 degrees Fahrenheit), will likely result in exposure to Acrylamide at a dose that’s just unacceptable if you’re proactively avoiding putting yourself at risk of accumulating Cancerous cells within the body.

For more info, I highly recommend visiting: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2009-08-26/html/E9-20495.htm AND http://www.fda.gov/food/foodborneillnesscontaminants/chemicalcontaminants/ucm053569.htm
Doing an independent search is crucial to keep yourself as well informed as possible.

Like a Fine Perfume…

“Happiness is like Perfume;
you can’t pour it on somebody else
without getting a few drops on yourself.”

– James Van Der Zee, Photographer

There have been countless mantras and mottos I have created and adopted, particularly as a coping mechanism in dealing with this Crazy/Beautiful thing called Life. I am challenged by my own mantras, my own thoughts on a daily basis …and more frequently. It – of course – provides for its many frustrations, but I’m content with this e-motion, as it is all a result of my effort to love myself… because liking myself just honestly isn’t enough.

There have been countless faces and spaces that I have taken on – created and adopted – simply for the sake of attempting to please others who say they “love you for you” when they quietly/silently mean they “don’t love you for you.” Playing make-believe is a lot of work, especially when you have no clue that you are doing just that! There is no love in being who you are not, naturally, at all times.

There have been countless sacrifices I have endured and made to temporarily appease others …

When do people ever find peace in the natural expression of themselves?

Ultimately, I learned that I can cater and submit to any and every demand and request – and at the end of the day – still nobody is HAPPY.

So what exactly am I sacrificing SO MUCH for?

Happiness in ME is
ALL
I ever need…

And I care not
for those who disagree.
